‘Mean Girls’ Sets Paramount+ Streaming Release Date

Get in losers, we’re going to Paramount+ to watch “Mean Girls” again. The 2024 movie musical will stream on Paramount+ beginning March 5, following its January theatrical release.

An adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the 2004 film, Tina Fey’s latest rendition of the high school comedy surpassed $100 million at the global box office after six weeks of release. It held the top spot at the domestic box office for three consecutive weeks following its Jan. 12 release. “Mean Girls” was originally slated to debut directly on Paramount+, however executives decided on a theatrical release after enthusiastic test screenings.

Taking on the role Lindsay Lohan originated, Angourie Rice stars as Cady Heron, who is forced to navigate high school politics for the first time after moving from Africa to the suburbs of Illinois. She soon encounters and infiltrates the Plastics, the most popular clique in school ruled by queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp, who also portrayed the role on Broadway).

The cast also includes Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Avantika, Jaquel Spivey, Auli’i Cravalho and original stars Tim Meadows and producer-writer Fey, with cameos from Lohan and Megan Thee Stallion. Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. directed the film.

In his review of the film, Variety’s Owen Gleiberman wrote, “Will the new movie replace the original film in anyone’s affections? That might depend on how old you are. (For some, the 2004 version will always be sacred; for others, it’s their mom’s ‘Mean Girls.’) I’ll just say that after you’ve seen the pop singer Reneé Rapp, as the head mean girl Regina (Rapp also played the role on stage), make her grand entrance in a black vinyl bodysuit, singing ‘My name is Regina George, and I am a massive deal…,’ as if she were Anita Ekberg crossed with Mata Hari, the scene carries a jolt, and you may wonder for a moment how Rachel McAdams, in the original film, made the impact she did without that song.”
